When you go to buy an AC, you are given two choices: inverter AC or non-inverter AC. For ordinary consumers, knowing the technicalities is not always interesting. However, you should know the basics that can save you a lot of money. If you don't mind spending more, my recommendation would be an inverter AC. Anyway, let's look at both of them. Inverter AC: It will adjust its cooling capacity based on the size of your room and other external factors. It cools the room more efficiently and is energy efficient. Non-Inverter AC: It is available at a lower cost compared to inverter ACs, making it budget friendly. Compared to inverter ACs, it has fewer components, which saves more money when it comes to repair or maintenance. Note: While buying, check for Energy Star label on the AC. More star means more energy efficiency.

3. Types of AC

You can choose the type of AC you want based on your room and personal preferences. Window, split or portable AC, each type has its advantages and disadvantages. Split AC: Available with advanced technologies like efficient cooling, low noise, inverter technology, smart connectivity and air purifier. But it requires professional installation and high maintenance cost compared to Window AC or Portable AC. Window AC: As the name suggests, it requires a window to install. Relatively easy to install and cost less than split ACs. Suitable for small to medium sized rooms. But it is more noisy and less attractive compared to split ACs. Portable AC: Portable AC is a temporary cooling solution for places where permanent installations are not possible. It is easy to install and easy to move from room to room, making it more desirable for temporary accommodations like rental rooms. However, unlike split AC or window AC, it uses room space and requires ventilation through window or door. Also, its cooling efficiency is lower than other types.

The installation process and requirements are different for different types of ACs. Split AC from above list requires professional help. Window AC is easy to install, although it may require mounting brackets based on the size and weight of the unit. Finally, portable AC requires minimal assistance for installation which is easier than other types.

Among the three types of ACs we discussed earlier, split ACs are less noisy as the compressor units are placed outside. While buying the AC, you can check the noise rating level provided by the manufacturer. Levels are marked in decibels (dB). Lower dB means less noise. Also, look for features like noise-reducing technology, insulated compressor compartments, and vibration-dampening mounts.

6. Air quality features

Look for additional features like filters and dehumidifiers that can improve indoor air quality. Here are some features that you should look out for while buying an AC. Air Filters: HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) is the current high standard for air filtration. It can trap 99.97% of airborne particles 0.3 microns or larger. These particles include dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, bacteria, and some viruses. In addition to HEPA filters, activated carbon filters can remove gaseous pollutants, odors, and chemical pollutants from the air. There is another option for air filters, washable filters. If you are looking for reusable, convenient and durable air filters, you can buy an AC with washable air filters. It may not be as highly efficient as HEPA filters, but the quality is definitely better than the normal air you breathe in your room without AC. Dehumidifiers: Some ACs have built-in dehumidifiers that can extract moisture from the air and reduce the humidity in the room. Purification: Some ACs have built-in air purification systems to kill bacteria, viruses and other harmful microorganisms.
